Zanzibar - Spice Island

Five days on the Spice Island was the final part of the itinerary. This was a large change after being in the bush for 10 days, with stops at safari lodges along the way, we moved to a city.

Zanzibar, and Stone Town where we stayed, is much different then the rest of Tanzania, but is still part of it. Years ago, it was a stopping point for the slave trade. It also was a separate country until the unification with Tanganyika in 1964 to form Tanzania

We stayed at the Clove Hotel in Stone Town, a small hotel run by a woman from the Netherlands. The top of the hotel, where you eat breakfast and hang out, is open and provides a view of the bay and other buildings around you. Buildings are required by law to maintain the older look of classic stone town. They also aren't doing any urban planning on the streets. You can get a small feeling for what it looks like on the google maps view of the area.

The large white ringed square near the beach is the palace, and the tiny blue square east about two buildings is the hotel.

While we were there we spent time walking around stone town and just relaxing. My father and I went diving one day, the three pictures of the dhow in the water are from the time during the dive. And Neeley and my Mom went on a spice island tour and learned about the history of the island.

Food was different than what we were used to on the safari. And we ate fresh fish every night from the food stalls that form up in the evenings on the beach. You pick up sticks of food on a grill, pay, and enjoy it sitting on a park bench.

Stone town is very busy most of the time, but you will notice very few pictures of people. This is mostly based on the traditions of the people who live there to stay private, and not have their picture taken. Though there are a few who don't mind, just ask.
