2 Weddings and a Broken Camera

Day 6 - Saturday the 13th - Paris - GMT +1 - Day of the Churches
Our last day in Paris. We needed to maximize our tourist locations, while minimizing our travel time... :) We decided to scale Notre Dame, visit Abelard & Heloise at Pere la Chaise, visit Sacre Coeur, and if possible see the Catacombs.

As Notre Dame was near the hotel, we decided to start with that in the morning. We waited in line and chatted with some New Yorkers (Long Islanders) who were also climbing the stairs with us. We came to the realization that there weren't any Parisians in Paris at this point, as the people in front of us were also Americans, and the ones two behind were from Spain.

It was a beautiful morning as we climbed up. There are 422 steps to the top (along with 422 to get down). Thankfully these are broken into three segments. The first one brings you to the gift shop, which was a bit odd based on where we were. Thankfully no Disney toys were available. The arched roof was impressive though.

We climbed to the next stage which is the primary area in between the peaks, and also where the bell is located. Most of the gargoyle shots are from here. We took a short trip up to see the giant 12 ton church bell that was hauled up by ropes and pulleys. I also noticed a private office at this level with a computer and copy machine, these were probably hauled up by slave labor.

After the gargoyles, we got to climb to right (southern) tower, and had a wonderful view, minus some of the afternoon haze. 422 steps later, we were at the bottom again, and on to our next destination.

We were going to Pere le Chaise Cemetary to visit Abelard's and Heloise's grave. Abelard & Heloise were star crossed lovers. It's considered good luck to leave flowers on their grave. We had no intention of visiting Jim Morrison while there.

We bought some flowers from Margaux and then hopped onto the metro (metropolitian) to the graveyard. We walked through the graves and aisles trying to find the specific site, which is not easy as things aren't laid out in nice city block structures. We left some flowers when we found the gravesite, took some pictures, and walked back to the metro.

Looking at the time we realized we weren't going to be able to see the catacombs as they were only open from 2-4pm. So we took the metro to Sacre Coeur. When we departed the metro we were suprised by the sudden insurgence of French speaking people. Had we found the hidden location where they all hide when tourists are in town?

We walked up. And up. And up. The last bit was a long set of stairs, with houses on the side. And we came upon Sacre Coeur, another cathedral in Paris. We walked around, and into the cathedral (photos were prohibited). We left Sacre Coeur, and meandered towards painters square. Painters square is a "marketplace" where a large number of artists who both sell their work, and paint in the square. The artists aren't the ones you see at street festivals who do caricatures (though some were), but ones doing oil and water color painting also. We couldn't find any velvet elvises, but there were definately things that could compete stylewise.

We walked back down, and down, and down, and caught the metro back to our hotel. When we left the metro station we discovered what appeared to be a huge parade or something. There were a handful of vendors out on the street and a large ammount of trash everywhere. A parade of police cars and street sweepers followed. They were following a large crowd of dancing people, who in turn were following a large bus that was blasting techno music. We followed for a bit, but still had to do some gift shopping before things closed, so went back to the hotel.

Shopping, and packing, and setting of the alarm clock to 5am ended our last day in Paris. Except for the trip out by Neeley to get some more crepes. :)
