Grand Canyon, 9-13 March 2005

March 9, 10, & 11, 2005 I hiked in the grand canyon with my parents and cousin. We drove up to the canyon Rim on the 8th, hiked down the South Kaibab trail on the 9th. Stayed at Phantom Ranch, and hiked up to Ribbon Falls on the 10th. On Friday the 11th, we hiked up Bright Angel trail back to the south rim. We drove out on the 12th. Included below are some of the pictures from this trip.

8 March 2005 - Pictures from the South Rim

The view from the Rim on the 8th was impressive. We arrived early enough to be able to get some shots while the sun was setting. This provided some nice shadows for pictures. All the shots below were shot during this time.

9 March 2005 - Hike down South Kaibab Trail

We started the day off getting up early so that we could catch the 9am shuttle to the South Kaibab trail head. The previous night we read that there was a water main break at Phantom Ranch. In the morning we received an update that it appeared to fixed enough that drinking water was available, but showers were not. This was not going to deter us, so we started down. Seven miles of down hill, and aproximately 4500 feet of elevation change, my knees were hurting before we even started. We did make it, in about six hours to the bottom. This gave us time to enjoy our steak dinner reservations at the phantom ranch canteen. This was a nice way to end the day of hiking.

10 March 2005 - Day hike up to Ribbon Falls

We started this Thursday off with a huge breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, and peaches. It's amazing how much you will eat after burning off piles of calories hiking the previous day. We had planned on taking this day easy, but we ended up doing the 11 mile hike, though only about 1500 feet elevation change, up to Ribbon Falls. This follows the North Bright Angel trail to almost the Cotton Wood campsite. It follows a stream, and bridges allow you to cross it in multiple locations. The first half of it is up the valley created by the water, the later half is across desert, and results in much higher temperatures. When we got to the falls we were able to climb up behind them for some interesting views. We ended up almost running back for beef stew for dinner.

11 March 2005 - Back to the South Rim

Another early day, amazing how you get up at sunrise when you go to bed before 10pm. The plan was to do the roughly nine mile hike back to the top of the south rim today. There is a stop at Indian Gardens at about the 4.5 mile marker, where we can refill water bottles. This means a little less weight, as coming down we had no place to refill. This hike follows the Colorado for awhile and then climbs up to Indian Garden. After a lunch break there it climbs to the top of the rim, as a series of switch backs. The weight of that one extra pair of socks in your pack suddenly seems to weigh more than it did 3 nights ago before hiking at all. This trail has mostly the same view, so going down it would probably be less interesting than the Kaibab trail, which has different views as your go down. We made it to the top in about 7 hours.

Some Favorite Shots & Information

I'm still pulling some of my favorites from my shots. Included below are a couple of them. For gear-heads, all these shots were taken with a Canon 10D camera (graciously lent to me by Sean Goller). I carried down a Sigma 15-30, Canon 28-135IS, Canon 50 1.8 prime, and a Canon 80-200 2.8L. I used a Moutainsmith Approach 2900 pack, and a Lowerpo OffTrail 2 w/ lens case 3's atatched. I did not carry a tripod, as my pack was already over 30 pounds with equipment, and extra clothes. If you have any questions about these pictures, or the trip, feel free to drop me some email at "panzer@dhp.com". I posted a bit of a tech report on FredMiranda.com also, the contents can be read by clicking here.
